The exemption from job search for job seekers over 62 years old has not existed in its automatic form since 2012. Before this date, seniors reaching a certain age could be exempted from any active steps with the former Pôle emploi.
The current system is based on a different logic: a personalized easing of the engagement contract, decided on a case-by-case basis by France Travail, rather than on a right acquired simply by reaching an age threshold.
Four cumulative criteria for easing after 62 years
France Travail conditions any adjustment of job search obligations on the simultaneous fulfillment of four requirements. None can be satisfied in isolation.
- Be at least 62 years old at the time of the request for easing from France Travail.
- Receive the unemployment benefit (ARE), which excludes beneficiaries of the specific solidarity allowance (ASS) or other social minima.
- Be registered in category 1, 2, or 3 of job seekers, meaning in a category corresponding to active job search.
- Justify a retirement insurance duration that allows obtaining a full-rate pension in the future, which implies providing an up-to-date career statement.
The cumulative nature of these conditions significantly reduces the number of potential beneficiaries. A 63-year-old job seeker who receives ARE but whose career statement does not yet allow for the full rate will be excluded from the system.
The concept of exemption from job search after 62 in France thus today covers a much more restrictive framework than before 2012.

Adjustment of the engagement contract: what France Travail can modify
When the four criteria are met, France Travail does not proceed with a deregistration. The referring advisor reviews the engagement contract, the document that lists the expected actions from each registrant: applications, appointments, training.
The concrete forms of this revision vary. The number of monthly applications can be reduced or eliminated. Invitations to group workshops can be spaced out. The obligation of immediate availability for a position can be relaxed.
Registration with France Travail remains active despite the easing. Monthly updates remain mandatory to continue receiving ARE. Easing of the engagement contract does not mean deregistration or cessation of registration.
How to formulate the request
The process begins directly with the referring advisor. The job seeker must bring their career statement, available on the Retirement Insurance website, possibly accompanied by proof of the number of validated quarters.
The advisor assesses the situation during an interview and formalizes the modifications in the engagement contract. This individualized procedure remains little known to seniors who are unaware of its existence.
Reasons for easing beyond the age criterion
Before 62, other circumstances may justify an adjustment of job search obligations. These reasons are subject to individual assessment by the advisor.
- A health condition documented by a medical certificate may justify a temporary or permanent reduction of search obligations.
- A heavy family burden (dependent relative, child with a disability) may be taken into account.
- A formalized and monitored project for creating or taking over a business may change the nature of the expected steps.
A 62-year-old senior with a health issue and meeting the age criteria will obtain a more significantly adjusted engagement contract than a job seeker meeting only one reason.
Maintaining ARE until retirement: the link with easing
The easing of job search obligations and the maintenance of rights to ARE until full retirement are two distinct systems. They often intersect in practice for job seekers close to retirement.
Job seekers aged 55 and over benefit, since the reform of April 1, 2025, from specific compensation conditions. The maximum duration of compensation and rules of degression depend on age and affiliation conditions.
The maintenance of unemployment rights until retirement concerns job seekers who meet the age, affiliation, and validated quarters conditions. The easing of the engagement contract after 62 complements this system: the senior receives ARE while being subject to reduced obligations.
What ends the compensation
ARE automatically ceases when the job seeker reaches the legal retirement age and justifies the necessary number of quarters for the full rate. France Travail periodically checks the retirement situation of registered seniors and may interrupt payments as soon as the liquidation conditions are met.
A job seeker who has reached the legal age without having all their quarters may, under certain conditions, continue to receive ARE until obtaining the full rate, within the maximum duration of their rights.

The former automatic exemption has given way to a less readable but more personalized mechanism. The career statement is the central document for any request for easing.
Without this up-to-date document, the France Travail advisor cannot make a decision. The seniors concerned should request it several months before their 62nd birthday to anticipate the process.
